Introduction to the Treatment & Management of Obesity

Can have an adult or young person focus or include both (Costs £100 per person for the 2 days – or conference style £1000 per day – 30 people x £100 = £3,000 saving of £2,000)

Objectives Suitability Outcome

By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the complexities of the obesity epidemic
  • Identify causative factors
  • Explain the process of change based
  • Challenge barriers and resistances to change through motivational techniques
  • Describe the importance of healthy eating and exercise
  • Conduct simple assessments to determine categorisation of obesity
  • Develop empathic responses by learning from the ‘experts’ – users perspective
  • Utilise learning to cascade information to others

(day one of the programme can be facilitated as a patient conference)

This course will enable participants to improvetheir knowledge,understanding and skillsin the basics of obesity management. The course does not make them competent practitioners in this field.

Module Four (1 day) – Specialist Module

The indicative content for this module is considered adaptable and flexible to meet individual needs. All the other modules are applicable to children and young people and should form the basis of this module. Options available are:

  • Working with children and young people – what do they need?
  • Clinical assessments in children and young people
  • Collaborative working – schools, sports and entertainment centres
  • Assessing Gillick Competence – confidentiality and the law
  • Child Protection Issues
  • Risk management and self harming behaviours

Please note: Module 1 is covered on the foundation programme and does not need to be repeated in training at advanced level.

Costs: £450 per person for the module (Personal Trainer level) – programme adapted to meet the needs of the PCT or organisation. Minimum of 10 participants. May be done in one week or facilitated over weeks or months to allow flexibility of attendance. Competencies assessed.
